Would you hire this man to be YOUR vacuum salesman?  What do you think of his math?  Post your ideas below:

(Postings should include first name and last initial - no last names!)

  1. The answers all came out to 28 but he didn't follow the rules of math. When he divided he cant bring the 2 down just to avoid it he has to use it in the first step. The addition he did wrong because he has to carry the 2 over to the other side and add that side up and when you actually do 13 times 7 it gives you 91.

  2. The reason he was able to prove all of these to be true was because he didnt properly carry the numbers over. In the very last example where he added all the 13s ontop of each other, he never caried the 2 to the next step of addition. Instead, he just added all of the numbers up individually.

  3. I wouldnt hire this man for my vacuum salesman because 7 times 13 is 91 not 28. There is a part in the clip where he tries to multiply 13 times 7 but he doesnt carry over the 2 when he multiplys 7 times 3. Instead he puts down the 21 and then 7 from when he does the 7 times 1 and adds the two outcomes together.example
    2
    13
    x 7

  4. The reason as to how he got his answers was simply due to the fact that he did not know how to properly do out these equations. For example when he did the multiplication he didnt properly carry over the 2 from 7x3.

  7. if someone didnt learn the proper rules to math then they would probably agree with him and think he did the math right and that 7x13=28 bc the way he did it was convincing but doesnt follow math rules. he cant just move the 2 out of the way in division and save it for later and he has to carry the numbers over in multiplication, which he also didnt do.

  8. The reasoning behind why the man got all the problems right is because he didnt carry over any of the numbers in any of the examples he did. for instance, the last problem he added up all the numbers individually and didnt carry over the numbers in the second place. If this man could prove a point like this right, even though it is clearly wrong i would definitely hire him. I think he would be a very good sales man and conner

  9. He proved that 13 * 7 = 28 because he didnt do the right math. he cariied the numbers incorrectly and when he added 13, 7 times, he added one side, then the other. i would hire him, hes intelligent ;)

  10. He proved that all the numbers had to be multiplied to get a certain product. Which in this case he thought that 7x13=28 beause he was so sure and positive in himself. But in reality the other guy was right because 7x13 doesn't equal 28 it equals 91. The correct answer is 7x4=28.

  11. He only could do this because he didnt carry the numbers over properly. We all know 7X4=28

he only got those answers couse he failed to carry over. or the fct he did not recgonize in 13 that the 1 is a ten. he simply applied the logic that he was dealing with 1 through 9 addtion not concepts such as carrying over and i would not hire him

  13. haha i have this movie. my dad and i always talked about this too. i would definately hire this man because he makes such convincing arguments. put that together with how annoying he would get after trying to convince you that he was right you'd end up buying a vacuum from him just to shut him up. obviously 7 x 4 = 28, but he got confused because he didn't carry all of the numbers that he mulitiplied in the first place properly, and he also didn't move the 7 over one place when he was adding 21 and 7. it should have been 21 + 70.

  14. I would hire him! Not as a math teacher but as a vacum salesman, sure! He may have forgotten his place values and did his math wrong but he did have a convincing argument, and if I did not know any better I would believe him. Plus he would sell more vacums then he needed to which would increase sales and in the end make me more money!

  15. He makes a pretty convincing argument, until you actually break down the "math" he is doing out. Would I hire him? I guess it depends on whether or not I would want my busness to be run with integrity. :)

  16. no i would not hire this man to be my vaccum salesman even though he is funny he doesnt know how to properly do math. For example when he added the 7 13's he just added all the numbers together. He didnt add the first column of threes and carry over to the next column which is why he got 28 as an answer.

  17. I would definitely hire this man because he is very confident in trying to sell his own opinion. He is very convincing, but I would definitely make sure to give him the right facts before I sent him out to sell any of my products. His math was very incorrect, especially when he added the extra two to the one in the 7x4 because he added it instead of dividing the seven into it. Good salesman, bad math matician.
